Japanese shrines (jinja) belong to Shinto—nature-centred kami worship without a single founder text. Visits are as much gratitude as wish-making.
Etiquette outline
- Bow lightly at the torii; walk the side of the path
- Purify at the temizuya: left hand, right hand, mouth (using left), rinse the dipper handle
- At the hall: toss a coin, bow twice, clap twice, pray, bow once
- Omamori charms are optional; exit quietly
Each shrine enshrines different kami—read the theme (exams, matchmaking, safe travel) before you queue.
