First China trip: set up Alipay as the primary wallet and keep WeChat Pay as backup. Both work for many Taiwan travelers, with different UX and strengths.
Why start with Alipay
Alipay’s foreign-visitor flows and travel integrations (transit codes in some cities, attractions, dining) are usually easier on day one. WeChat Pay is everywhere for everyday stalls—great as a second option.
Before you fly
- Install both apps and finish identity / card-binding steps that work abroad
- Confirm your card is supported; run a tiny test payment if available
- Bring a China-ready data plan so QR pay works without café Wi‑Fi
You do not have to choose only one forever—enable both, lead with Alipay, and fall back to WeChat Pay when a stall prefers it.
